The mental health of the population is deteriorating under the influence of numerous factors. This was stated by Nurgul Ibraeva, head of the primary healthcare department at the Ministry of Health, at a press conference.

She noted that according to research, the main causes of mental disorders are: chronic stress, poverty, financial instability, migration, family separations, domestic violence, alcoholism (more common in men), the consequences of trauma, bullying among adolescents, loneliness, stigmatization, and delays in seeking medical help.

According to psychiatrist Boris Li from Family Medicine Center No. 6, mental disorders vary widely, and there are no universal signs. For example, symptoms of depression may include loss of interest in life, decreased social activity, persistent low mood, and feelings of helplessness.

According to data from the World Health Organization, issues such as depression and anxiety are most commonly faced by young people and middle-aged individuals, while dementia and cognitive impairments are more prevalent among the elderly.

In September 2025, former Minister of Health Erkin Checheybaev stated that about 11% of the population of Kyrgyzstan suffers from various mental disorders, including anxiety, depression, and suicide risks, as well as dependence on alcohol, tobacco, or drugs.

In response to these issues, Kyrgyzstan is developing the first national mental health strategy in a long time. As part of primary healthcare, the establishment of multidisciplinary teams is planned, including a family doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist, and community nurse.
