Every year, there is a 10-11% increase in the number of patients with mental disorders in Kyrgyzstan. This was reported at a press conference by Nurgul Ibraeva, head of the primary health care department of the Ministry of Health.

She noted that the growth of this trend began in 2021.

According to statistics as of January 1, 2025, more than 50,000 people with psychiatric disorders are registered in the country. Each year, a diagnosis is made for 3,000 to 4,500 citizens for the first time. Nurgul Ibraeva emphasized that the issue of mental health is relevant not only for Kyrgyzstan but for the entire world, adding that alongside diseases such as diabetes, heart and lung diseases, mental disorders are classified as non-communicable diseases.

In September 2025, former Minister of Health Erkin Checheybaev stated that about 11% of the population of Kyrgyzstan suffers from various mental disorders, including anxiety disorders, depression, and suicide risks, as well as dependencies on alcohol, tobacco, and psychoactive substances.

In light of this situation, a national mental health strategy is being developed for the first time in the country. Within the framework of primary health care, multidisciplinary teams consisting of family doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, and community nurses are being established.
