Marlen Mamataliyev: New cars and motorcycles do not mean that a person is wealthy

The deputy proposed an initiative to change the approach to defining poverty

Deputy Marlen Mamataliyev initiated a review of the existing poverty criteria in Kyrgyzstan. He voiced his thoughts during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov and other deputies.

In his opinion, many families are unable to receive social benefits due to strict conditions related to the age of vehicles. For example, owning a car older than 20 years or a motorcycle excludes the possibility of receiving assistance, while newer and more affordable models of transport are accessible to those in difficult financial situations.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Mamataliyev's recommendations will be taken into account during the comprehensive review of poverty criteria.

For reference, in Kyrgyzstan, citizens with annual incomes below 65,000 soms are considered to be below the poverty line.

Individuals with an income of less than 41,349 soms per year are also classified as poor.

Poverty level calculations are conducted based on the analysis of household budgets, taking into account the minimum needs for food and non-food goods.
