This step may affect both Shiites and Sunnis
According to the political scientist, Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi from Iran, who declared jihad against Israel and the USA, has initiated the process of a religious war. This statement was commented on by military expert and associate professor of the Department of Political Analysis and Socio-Psychological Processes at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics Alexander Perendzhiev in an interview with the publication "Lenta.ru".
“If we consider him as an authoritative Shiite theologian, it should be noted that the largest Shiite community, besides Iran, is in Iraq. It is obvious that this community will have to somehow respond to such a declaration of war. It is quite possible that the jihad will not become widespread and will be limited to Iran and part of Iraq,” noted Perendzhiev.
The expert also added that if a fatwa is issued, the scale of the conflict may significantly increase, affecting not only Shiites but also Sunnis.
“This will create serious problems for the USA and Israel, as fighting against a state is one thing, while fighting against all Shiites in the world or the majority of Muslims is quite another. Such a statement indicates that the conflict may take on a protracted and serious nature,” concluded the political scientist.
