In a recent interview with Sky News, Infantino stated that the sanctions against Russia did not produce the expected effect and only increased the level of "disappointment and hatred." He emphasized that sports should remain outside of political disagreements, and the exclusion of Russia from international competitions did not contribute to bringing people together.
Since February 2022, Russian club and national teams have been suspended from participating in tournaments organized by FIFA and UEFA due to the onset of military actions in Ukraine. This decision deprived the Russian national team of the opportunity to participate in the qualifying matches and final tournaments of the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, as well as in the qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The ban applies to both men's and women's teams, as well as youth teams.
Infantino highlighted the importance of allowing youth to participate in international competitions, arguing that the involvement of young Russian footballers could foster dialogue and unite people in Europe. He has raised this issue multiple times at UEFA congresses.
This statement from the FIFA president comes against the backdrop of the upcoming meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee, scheduled for the end of the month. This body could theoretically discuss the possibility of Russia's return to the international football calendar. However, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has previously noted that the return of Russian teams is only possible after the military actions have concluded.
Despite the existing ban, Russian national teams continue to hold international friendly matches outside the framework of official FIFA and UEFA tournaments.
