The English language captivates the countryside

For the full integration of the English language as a second language, active work from the "three key parties": the government, students, and educators is necessary. This language has ceased to be merely a subject of study and has become an essential "competency" for forming global citizens of the new generation. In this direction, the UK government provides support to Mongolia, as reported by MiddleAsianNews.

“The English language is spreading across Mongolia thanks to the UK-supported educational program,” said the British Ambassador to Ulaanbaatar, Fiona Blight.

Fiona Blight recently visited the Dundgovi aimag, where she met with local students and educators.

“As part of the educational program in Dundgovi aimag, 56 teachers and 7,291 students have been trained, and it was inspiring to meet them and learn about the horizons that knowledge of English opens up,” shared Fiona Blight.

On December 16, 2025, the ambassador signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which marked the beginning of the second phase of the project "Support for English Language Skills for Teachers and Students in Remote Areas," funded by the UK government and implemented by UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of Mongolia.

The Chevening alumni program is one of many projects supported by the United Kingdom.

In Uvs, experienced instructors share their knowledge with local teachers, receiving support from the UK. This training course for primary school teachers is led by Ariunzul Liijuu-Ochir, a Chevening program alumna, funded by the Chevening Alumni Fund.

Thus, the UK contributes to high-quality English language education in Mongolia and invests in the education of students across the country.

In the 2023-2024 academic year, the Pearson English curriculum was integrated into the education system of Mongolia. Starting in 2025, students in grades 5-7 will be able to study English for 100% of their lessons through this program. In the next academic year, 2025-2026, the program will gradually expand to students in grades 3-9.

By 2025, the training of 2,300 English teachers will be completed, and a program update is planned, which will include additional instructors through a series of professional development modules, training in blended learning, developing new graduates, as well as training in assessment and improving teaching standards.

A policy regarding English language teaching and textbook creation based on the Pearson program will also be initiated.
