A 150-year-old historical church is on fire in Amsterdam

Two hours after the fire started, the upper parts of the church collapsed. In response to the situation, the alert level was raised to regional disaster Grip 2, which allowed for the mobilization of additional emergency services to combat the fire and assist the victims.

Note: Grip 2 indicates an emergency situation that requires coordination among multiple emergency services at the regional level, as the scale of the incident exceeds the capabilities of a single city or municipality.

The flames caused numerous sparks to fly around the area, posing a threat to neighboring buildings.

Amsterdam's Mayor Femke Halsema emphasized that the main priority is ensuring the safety of citizens.

“This is a terrible and intense fire in this historic building. Our first concern is the health and safety of the residents of nearby homes,” the mayor noted.

Due to the fire, residents of nearby houses had to be evacuated. A warning was sent to the area via NL-Alert, informing about heavy smoke and safety recommendations. All streets adjacent to the church were closed to traffic.
