According to information received from The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, one of the missiles failed in flight, while another was intercepted by an SM-3 missile launched from an American ship. However, it is unclear whether the missile was successfully intercepted.

As emphasized by the WSJ, this is the first instance of Iran using medium-range missiles in combat and a significant attempt by the country to demonstrate a threat to American interests beyond the Middle East. Located about 4,000 kilometers from Iran, Diego Garcia has become the target of a strike that may indicate Tehran possesses missiles with greater range than previously claimed.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that Tehran had limited the range of its missiles to 2,000 kilometers to avoid being perceived as a global threat.

In light of this incident, U.S. President Donald Trump noted on March 20 that Washington is "very close to achieving" its goals in the conflict with Iran and is considering reducing military operations in the region. Reuters also reports that the conflict has been ongoing since February 28, and Iran has recently attacked not only targets in the Persian Gulf but also the Diego Garcia base.
