Wildfires Rage in Chile

Powerful wildfires continue in central Chile, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 people, according to Minister of Civil Security Luis Cordero, as reported by the newspaper Tercera.

The fires have mainly affected the Ñuble and Biobío regions, where 24 active fire hotspots have been recorded, emergency services report.

"As of January 18, the death toll from the wildfires in the Biobío region has risen to 16," the publication informs.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric has declared a "disaster mode" in the affected areas and plans to visit the impacted regions, as he announced on the social network X, according to the National Disaster Prevention Service (SENAPRED).
