According to a statement from TCO, the company decided to temporarily suspend production as a precautionary measure. The reason was issues affecting some power distribution systems at the site.
Recall that on January 18, an incident occurred at Tengiz involving the ignition of the transformer of turbine GT-9.3 at GTES-4, after which the transformer GT-9.5 also caught fire. Both fires were successfully extinguished, and fortunately, there were no injuries. The causes of these incidents are currently being investigated.
Tengiz is the largest oil and gas field in Kazakhstan, located in the Atyrau region, 350 km southeast of the city of Atyrau. The Korolev field is located just 20 km northeast of Tengiz. Both sites are operated by Tengizchevroil, in which 50% of the shares belong to Chevron, 25% to Exxon Mobil, 20% to KazMunayGas (a subsidiary of Samruk-Kazyna), and 5% to the Russian company Lukoil.
The oil reserves at the Tengiz and Korolev fields are approximately 1.4 billion tons, equivalent to 11.5 billion barrels. The majority of Tengizchevroil's production is exported via the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC). However, due to damage to the infrastructure of the marine terminal in Southern Ozerievka (near Novorossiysk), some oil is currently being redirected through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and via the Druzhba pipeline to Germany.
