China has built the longest tunnel in the world under the Tian Shan

In northwestern China, the longest road tunnel has been opened for traffic, built on the Urumqi - Uwei expressway. The length of this tunnel is over 22 kilometers, as reported by Chongqing Daily.

This tunnel, known as the "Tian Shan Victory Tunnel," is located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The opening of the tunnel marks the start of full operation of the fastest highway connecting the northern and southern regions of Xinjiang. Traveling along this route will now take only 20 minutes, significantly reducing the travel time through the mountains, which previously took several hours, notes the Xinhua agency.

The Urumqi - Uwei expressway runs through the Tian Shan mountains and connects settlements in the north and south. The main route includes 12 interchanges, 17 tunnels, and numerous bridges, culverts, and crossings. The Tian Shan Tunnel has become a key element of this entire infrastructure, setting two world records: it is not only the longest but also the deepest tunnel for expressways, reaching a depth of 1.1 kilometers.

The Tian Shan mountains stretch for 2500 kilometers across central Xinjiang, dividing it into northern and southern parts. With the opening of the new expressway, travel time between these regions has been reduced from 7 to 3 hours.
