A large project aimed at implementing modern water-saving technologies has started in the Batken region. The press service of the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic reported that the installation of a drip irrigation system has begun on additional plots in the village of Zhany-Zher, located in the Tорт-Гул rural district.
Work is being carried out in the irrigation zone of the R-4 canal, which is managed by the district water management authority. The total area of land that will be converted to the new irrigation system is 143 hectares. Active construction began in the second half of January 2026.
Specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture note several key advantages of this initiative:
Resource savings: by delivering water and fertilizers directly to the roots, unnecessary losses are eliminated. Land protection: this technology helps prevent soil salinization and erosion. Increased efficiency: automation of the process significantly reduces labor costs for farmers while simultaneously increasing overall yield.
This project is part of the strategy to adapt Kyrgyzstan's agriculture to climate change. Given the scarcity of water resources in the Batken region, the implementation of drip irrigation will create a foundation for the sustainable development of the local agricultural sector and allow for more rational use of new land areas.
