WHO warns of potential further spread of Nipah virus

Tarik Jazarovich noted that the definitive source of the infection has still not been established. It is important for the population to be aware of the risk factors, including the consumption of date palm juice.

The Nipah virus is a dangerous pathogen for which neither a vaccine nor specific treatment has been developed. Last week, a new outbreak was recorded in West Bengal: five cases of the disease were confirmed, including a doctor, a nurse, and a medical facility employee. Approximately 100 people who came into contact with the infected individuals are in quarantine.

This zoonotic virus causes severe forms of encephalitis and respiratory diseases, transmitted from bats and pigs. Major outbreaks are observed in South and Southeast Asia. According to WHO, the mortality rate from Nipah infection ranges from 40 to 75%.
