The Chairman of the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB), Nikolai Podguzov, stated that by 2040, the population of Central Asia could grow to 96 million people. This increase will create significant pressure on infrastructure in the areas of water resources, energy, and transportation.

Bank analysts emphasize that significant improvements in energy efficiency and water resource management are necessary for the successful development of the region. According to EDB estimates, Central Asia is one of the most climate change-affected regions in the world.

Podguzov also noted that by 2028, a water deficit is expected to grow, which could range from 5 to 12 cubic kilometers per year.

He highlighted that a significant portion of water resources is lost due to outdated infrastructure in the region.

“To achieve progress and successful outcomes, it is essential to first address the challenges facing the region, such as demographic changes, transportation issues, and water supply. These three aspects are closely interconnected,” said the head of the EDB.

According to UNICEF, by 2025, the population of Central Asia will exceed 84 million people.
