In Kyrgyzstan, the restoration of the environmental protection prosecutor's office is planned. The Attorney General, Maksat Asanaliev, announced this on April 8 during a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, responding to questions from deputies.
He noted that President Sadyr Japarov supported this proposal, agreeing to increase the number of staff by 30 positions.
It has become known that the new prosecutor's office will operate in both the northern and southern parts of the country, focusing its efforts on four main areas:
- monitoring the legality of the use of water resources and subsoil;
- issues related to the licensing of geological exploration, including work in glacier areas;
- monitoring the condition of tailings storage facilities;
- ensuring compliance with legislation in the field of environmental protection and protected areas.
Asanaliev also emphasized that there are cases where licenses are issued for geological exploration on glaciers.
Deputy Gulya Kozhokulova had previously expressed concern about the state's insufficient attention to environmental protection issues, noting that they are mainly discussed by activists. In her opinion, the Ministry of Ecology is primarily limited to observation.
Currently, the Jogorku Kenesh is reviewing the annual report of the Attorney General on the state of legality in the country for 2025 and measures to strengthen it. Yesterday, the relevant parliamentary committee already approved the presented report.
