China has officially launched the world's largest energy storage facility using compressed air, located in Jiangsu province. This project has become a significant part of the national strategy for developing energy storage systems aimed at supporting the transition to "green" energy, reports Bloomberg.

According to information from Harbin Electric Corp., the company involved in the implementation of this project, the facility has a capacity of 2400 MWh. It is capable of providing up to 600 MW of electricity, which is sufficient to meet the annual needs of approximately 600,000 households.

As noted by BloombergNEF, technologies based on compressed air energy storage are recognized as some of the most cost-effective and durable solutions. Their principle of operation involves pumping air into underground reservoirs during periods of low demand and then releasing it to drive turbines during peak consumption hours.

The development of such initiatives is driven by the rapid increase in the share of renewable energy sources in China. The country's authorities plan to put into operation more than 180 GW of new energy capacities by 2027, which contributes to the active growth of both energy storage systems and alternative technologies, including compressed air.
