Why is self-management important in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease? Conclusions of scientists
In the context of the high prevalence of this disease, self-management becomes particularly important. This approach involves active patient participation in monitoring their health: tracking symptoms, making lifestyle changes, timely identifying exacerbations, and seeking medical assistance.
During the review, over 60 scientific publications from international databases such as PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library, and eLibrary.ru were analyzed, covering the period from 2000 to 2025. The study included Cochrane systematic reviews, GOLD clinical guidelines, materials from the World Health Organization, and information on the implementation of digital technologies in COPD management.
The findings of the study indicate that traditional "COPD schools" are gradually being replaced by digital solutions, including mobile applications, telemedicine services, and wearable health monitoring devices. The use of elements of virtual reality and gamification contributes to increasing patient motivation and adherence to treatment.
However, the authors of the study also point out existing barriers to the implementation of such methods. These include low levels of digital literacy among older adults, insufficient integration of medical data into electronic systems, and weak coordination between healthcare professionals and IT platforms.
Researchers emphasize that self-management is an important aspect of the modern approach to treating COPD. Among the priority tasks for Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, they highlight the need to develop national self-management protocols, integrate digital data into eHealth systems, and train healthcare professionals in remote patient support methods.
