According to information presented at the joint meeting of the deputy groups "Eldik" and "Ala-Too," the level of poverty in Kyrgyzstan is decreasing very slowly. This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov.

The leader of the deputy group "Eldik," Akylbek Tumonbaev, noted that the invitation of government representatives was related to the need to discuss the implementation of the bill on state benefits. He also reported on a proposal to introduce benefits for children under 12 years old.

Edil Baisalov emphasized that during the pandemic, the level of poverty sharply increased and reached 30 percent.

"A person is considered to be living below the poverty line if their annual income is less than 65,000 soms. Last year, this figure was 25.7 percent. Despite our efforts, poverty reduction is happening very slowly — only by 2 percent per year," he added.

According to him, among children under 16 years old, the level of poverty is 33 percent, which corresponds to 950,000 children in the country living in poverty.

In addition, Edil Baisalov reported that the government's five-year plan includes a provision to reduce the poverty level to 20 percent, expressing hope to achieve 15 percent by the end of this period.
