A unique ancient image with a lunar calendar found in Khakassia

Archaeologists have discovered a stone slab at the Itkol II burial mound in Khakassia, which features a unique image preserved since the late 3rd millennium BC. According to the Center for Rescue Archaeology of the Institute of History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the slab depicts a stylized face, to which 18 mysterious figures in the form of segments are attached.

Of these, seven figures are located in the area of the eyes, nose, and mouth, while the remaining eleven are positioned at the top of the head. These shapes resemble stone "lunar" pendants found in the graves of the Okunev culture. Scientists suggest that these pendants may have served a ritual function in ancient costumes.

Researchers emphasize: "The arrangement and number of these 'pendants' in the composition are interconnected with the most important aspects of the lunar calendar." This discovery supports the hypothesis that ancient peoples of Siberia used similar symbols to track lunar phases.

The burial mound itself, which dates back to 2880-2630 BC, consists of a structure made of vertical slabs with nine burials inside. Although most of them are nearly empty, archaeologists have uncovered a rare artifact – a bone arrow shaft straightener. Such finds are extremely rare in the graves of the Okunev culture, making this discovery particularly valuable.

Reference

The Okunev culture is an archaeological culture of Bronze Age pastoralists, distributed in the territory of the Minusinsk Basin along the middle course of the Yenisei River (modern-day Khakassia, southern Krasnoyarsk Krai, and Tuva). It is named after the Okunev ulus, where it was first discovered in 1928. The culture is primarily known for its burial monuments – mounds surrounded by rectangular enclosures made of stone slabs.
