Address to parents: be careful, minors may become victims of online recruitment

In Kyrgyzstan, parents are strongly advised to be vigilant: radical groups are using the internet to recruit teenagers. In the last six months, law enforcement agencies have recorded instances where minors were preparing terrorist acts, as reported in a press release from the GKNB.

GKNB: Teenagers in Kyrgyzstan were preparing terrorist acts

The GKNB emphasized that the internet has become an important part of youth life, offering opportunities for communication and self-development. However, along with this, there are those online who manipulate teenagers, involving them in dangerous radical ideas, including terrorism.

The process of remote radicalization involves persuading teenagers through social networks and messengers to adopt dangerous views that justify violence, which can alter their worldview.

“In some cases, teenagers are trained online to create homemade explosive devices and may fall victim to calls for attacks on law enforcement officers. Such actions, including preparation for them, are serious crimes and carry criminal liability in the Kyrgyz Republic,” noted the GKNB.

In the past six months, the GKNB has identified several cases of radicalization among teenagers related to online recruitment by terrorist organizations. Some of those detained were at the stage of preparing a terrorist act, studying instructions for creating explosive devices, while others were already engaged in their production. These events may threaten societal stability and national security.

“Often the recruitment process goes unnoticed, through friendly communication, manipulation, and false promises. This can have a devastating effect on a teenager, severing their connection to reality and involving them in criminal groups, jeopardizing their future,” added the GKNB.

A key point remains open dialogue with teenagers and monitoring their online activity, which can help identify warning signs. If parents notice that their children are behaving differently, becoming more withdrawn, or showing aggression, it is important not to remain indifferent,” advise law enforcement agencies.

Parents should pay attention to the following changes in their children's behavior:

Upon noticing such signs, it is important to take action and not remain indifferent. No one is immune to such threats, and every parent should carefully monitor their children's online activity. Maintain open dialogue and exercise reasonable control.

“A safe internet is a shared responsibility. Support from family, educational institutions, and society as a whole plays a key role in protecting children from negative influences and ensuring their future. The safety of children is a task for all of us. Only through the joint efforts of families, society, and the state can we prevent dangerous influences on youth,” emphasize the GKNB.

In case of noticing the mentioned signs in a teenager's behavior, it is recommended to contact local GKNB units.
