The EU tightens migration rules: citizens will be deported to third countries
At a meeting of the European Union Council, a decision was made to reform migration rules. According to the new regulations, individuals applying for asylum may be sent to third countries with which they have no connections. A list of "safe" countries has also been compiled.

These changes will expedite the process of deporting asylum seekers to centers located in countries to which they have no ties. The new regulations will come into effect on June 12, 2026, as part of a comprehensive reform of asylum rules in Europe.

According to the updated norms, EU member states will be able to deport individuals to third countries even if asylum seekers have no personal connections there. Previously, a "close connection" was required—such as relatives or long-term residence. Now, it will be sufficient to have an agreement between the EU country and the relevant state. This model has already been tested by the United Kingdom and is referred to as the "Rwandan" model.

A unified European list of "safe" countries has also been approved, which will serve as a guideline for all member states. This list includes countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Kosovo, Colombia, India, and Bangladesh.

It is important to note that there is no automatic denial of asylum; all grounds for obtaining it will be verified.

Candidates for EU membership will also be granted "safe" status for their citizens. This list includes Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, and Turkey. However, in the event of EU sanctions or the outbreak of armed conflicts in these countries, exceptions to this rule may apply.
