In Kyrgyzstan, the system for early detection and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity is actively being developed. This condition occurs in children born prematurely and can lead to irreversible blindness without timely medical assistance. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health, citing ophthalmologist Alina Sagynbekova from the National Center for Maternal and Child Health.

Retinopathy of prematurity is usually diagnosed within the first three weeks of the baby's life.

All children born before 35 weeks of pregnancy must be examined by an ophthalmologist.

In Bishkek, such screenings are conducted at the NCMMCH, while in the regions, they are carried out at central regional hospitals, where trained specialists perform screenings for this pathology.

It is important to note that parents cannot independently recognize the disease in its early stages, so consulting doctors in the first weeks after birth is critically important.

Starting in 2024, surgeries for the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity have begun at the NCMMCH, marking a new stage in the development of the system. The number of children receiving specialized care increased from 42 in 2024 to 79 in 2025.

Today, doctors use modern methods such as laser coagulation and anti-VEGF therapy, supported by the High Technology Fund of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as combined approaches. This indicates a shift towards a sustainable model of active treatment for retinopathy of prematurity in the country.

Experts emphasize that every premature child should undergo examinations by an ophthalmologist, ENT specialist, neurologist, and pediatrician. Only a comprehensive approach and early monitoring can help identify potential problems in time and preserve the child's health.
