In the appeal, it is stated: "We, followers of Akhunbaev's school, are convinced that naming the NIIHSTO after the academician will not only immortalize his memory but also serve as an important step towards uniting professionals and determining the strategic direction for the development of high technologies in medicine in Kyrgyzstan."
Isa Konoevich Akhunbaev is considered the founder of cardiac surgery in Kyrgyzstan. In 1959, he performed the first heart surgery (commissurotomy for mitral stenosis) in Central Asia, which brought the medicine of the Kyrgyz SSR to an international level.
According to the authors of the appeal, NIIHSTO is the result of the scientific achievements that Akhunbaev laid down in the 1960s in the thoracic surgery department. Naming the institute after the founder confirms its status as the main successor of his legacy and emphasizes that cardiac surgery is an independent high-tech discipline with a rich history and an outstanding founding father who possesses immense ethical and scientific authority.
Furthermore, it is emphasized that Akhunbaev's name is known beyond the borders of Kyrgyzstan, and he is respected in the international scientific community, especially in the CIS countries and the Turkic world. "The creation of an institute bearing his name will facilitate international connections, obtaining grants, and participation in international associations of cardiothoracic surgeons. This guarantees the continuity of the school and adherence to ethical standards, as Akhunbaev was always known for his dedication to patients," the cardiothoracic surgeons noted.
The appeal also mentions that Akhunbaev's name has served as a moral compass for surgeons, both experienced and novice, for over 50 years. His biography—from a simple shepherd to an academician and a legend of world surgery—has inspired many.
"Creating a 'cult of professionalism' around Akhunbaev's name fosters a corporate culture in the institute focused on high results and continuous development, which is extremely important for saving lives. The name of this legend obliges us to meet global standards and unites the country's cardiothoracic surgeons under one banner," the appeal states.
Naming the institute will enhance the national scientific tradition, increase the international recognition of the school, and create a brand for Kyrgyz cardiac surgery, as well as serve as a tribute to the person who laid the foundations of the country's healthcare.
