A group of independent journalists has appealed to the authorities of Kyrgyzstan, calling for a review of criminal cases initiated against their colleagues and civil society activists. They posted their appeal on social media.
The recipients include President Sadyr Japarov, head of the GKNB Jumgalbek Shabdanbekov, and chairman of the Supreme Court Mederbek Satyiev.
In light of recent personnel changes and reorganization within the security agencies, the initiators of the appeal request special attention to cases involving representatives of civil society, activists, and journalists who have been held accountable under Article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, concerning "Organization of Mass Riots," as well as under other articles.
In their appeal, the applicants put forward the following demands:
- to conduct an additional review and, if grounds are found, to reconsider judicial decisions in cases of journalists and activists related to Article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic;
- to provide a legal assessment of the validity of the sentences issued;
- to apply the legal mechanisms for rehabilitation in cases of identified violations;
- to terminate criminal prosecution in those cases where there are insufficient legal grounds;
- to create legal conditions for the return of citizens who left the country due to criminal prosecution;
- to conduct an official and legal assessment of the actions of officials in cases of possible procedural violations;
- to consider the issue of compensation for damages if violations of citizens' rights are established.
“We are confident that an objective and transparent consideration of these issues will contribute to strengthening public trust in state institutions and the further development of Kyrgyzstan based on the rule of law and democratic principles,” the initiators of the appeal concluded.
