During a parliamentary meeting, Deputy Seid Atambaev raised the issue regarding the state of the museum, noting that major repairs have not been conducted here for the past 20 years.
He emphasized that the worn-out showcases could pose a danger to children and school students participating in excursions.
The parliamentarian urged the government to pay attention to the unique exhibits that are currently under threat.
According to the National Academy of Sciences, during the major renovation of the main building of the academy, the museum's premises were also updated. However, the old showcases containing exhibits have cracked, preventing the museum from opening to visitors.
“Various events are planned for the anniversary. The shelves with animals and birds will be modernized, and new collections will be introduced. A mammoth figure will also be recreated, as its skeleton was found in Ak-Suu,” the institution added.
The academy also emphasizes that the large collection of reptiles and mammals inhabiting Kyrgyzstan no longer fits in the existing exhibition halls.
“In the future, we plan to build a large Museum of Nature in Bishkek, which will be located in one of the parks or in the Botanical Garden. We have even developed a building project in the shape of a seven-story yurt,” concluded the National Academy of Sciences.
The zoological museum, founded in 1926, is the oldest scientific institution in the system of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan. Its collections feature unique specimens of the fauna of the Tian Shan, including the rare snow leopards and endemic birds. Currently, the museum serves as the largest repository of zoological samples in Central Asia with global scientific significance.
