Zubayir Abdukakharov, a resident of the village of Bek-Abad in the Suzak district, along with his family, has created a successful gardening enterprise. Their greenhouses host a variety of ornamental plants and trees that are used for landscaping private and public spaces. A Turmush correspondent learned how their farm contributes to the development of the "green economy" in Kyrgyzstan.
The Abdukakharov family has been engaged in gardening since 2003. The idea for the business came from Zubayir's father, who was the first to bring seedlings of blue spruce from the Issyk-Kul region to the area. Initially, they were involved in reselling, but soon mastered the cultivation of trees from seeds. Over the past ten years, the demand for ornamental coniferous plants has significantly increased. Although wholesalers remain their main clients, three years ago the family built a new greenhouse to expand their assortment. "I continue my father's work. Seedlings have always been a part of our lives. We started with blue spruces and added many other species. Thanks to the fertile black soil of our region, three years ago we erected a greenhouse on 3 hectares. The soil is the foundation, and we add compost and fertilizers," Zubayir shares.
Today, the nursery features about 80 species of ornamental plants, and the geography of their origin is impressive:
- roses – 4–5 varieties from Italy and Uzbekistan.
- lilacs – several varieties of Japanese lilac.
- exotic plants – 5–6 types of hydrangea, 2 types of magnolia from Mongolia, peonies, and even palms.
Zubayir also noted that their task is not just to bring in plants but to adapt them to local conditions. "We take care of the seedlings, monitor their condition. Only after full adaptation to the climate do we put them up for sale. It is important for us that customers are satisfied and that the plants take root well," he added.

For example, thuja from Poland and some species of spruce from China have not taken root in the local soil. Zubayir shared his observations:
- if the leaves are drying but not falling off, it may indicate root damage or improper watering.
- natural yellowing and leaf drop is a normal process for plants.
- regular watering and fertilization are key to the successful development of the seedling.
Prices for ornamental plants in the nursery vary depending on their rarity and age. The minimum price for flowers starts at 150 soms, while elite varieties of Japanese lilac can cost up to 70,000 soms. Here, you can also find seedlings of traditional Tien Shan spruces and various types of thuja.
Zubayir noted that previously, municipalities were the main clients, ordering plants for landscaping parks. In recent years, there has been a growing interest from private homeowners who want to beautifully decorate their plots.
