Elvira Surabaldiyeva, a deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh, has called on the authorities to preserve the specialized school for children with visual impairments and not to worsen their situation.
On January 14, during a parliamentary meeting, the deputy spoke about plans to relocate the boarding school for visually impaired and blind children from the capital to the village of Vorontsovka.
Surabaldiyeva noted that there are only two such schools operating in Kyrgyzstan — one in Bishkek, which educates 220 children, and another in Osh. About one hundred of the students come from other regions of the country.
According to her, the school's staff and parents express serious concern regarding the possible move. Vorontsovka is located quite far away, and the regularity of public transport leaves much to be desired, which does not take into account the specific needs of children with visual impairments.
“This school cannot be moved. Children with vision problems take a long time to learn to navigate their way — they need to memorize the route and landmarks. If the school is relocated, they will have to learn a new direction again,” emphasizes the deputy.
Surabaldiyeva urged local authorities to keep the educational institution in its current location to avoid creating additional difficulties for children with special educational needs.
