Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have begun implementing new mechanisms for managing transboundary water resources in Central Asia, as reported by Podrobno.uz.

At meetings of the water management ministers held in Turkestan, the parties confirmed their readiness to create an automated and transparent system for distributing water resources, which is crucial for the agricultural and energy sectors of the region.

One of the key steps will be the complete automation of monitoring on the Syr Darya River. With the support of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), 10 digital hydrological posts will be installed — five in each country. This measure aims to ensure full transparency of real-time data and eliminate disputes regarding the volumes of distributed water.

In addition to this, both countries will focus on modernizing physical infrastructure and implementing technologies to conserve resources. In 2026, an expansion of work on the interstate Dostyk Canal is planned, including mechanized cleaning and repair of key structures.

Furthermore, the agencies agreed to jointly exchange experiences in the implementation of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems to adapt agriculture to climate change and resource scarcity.
