The administration of the U.S. president has expressed support for a bill aimed at repealing the Jackson-Vanik amendment, which restricts trade between the United States and Central Asia. This statement was made by U.S. Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio during hearings in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“We fully support this decision,” Rubio noted, commenting on the potential repeal of the amendment and its impact on Washington's relations with Central Asian states. “This will allow us to significantly enhance our engagement with the Central Asian republics,” he added.

The Jackson-Vanik amendment was introduced in 1974 and linked the normalization of bilateral trade to issues of Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union. Rubio calls this act “an artifact,” pointing to its obsolescence.

The legislator who questioned the Secretary of State also reported that he and his colleague have already developed a bill aimed at repealing this amendment concerning Central Asian countries.
