Kyrgyzstan is in dialogue with the EU regarding possible restrictions - Baisalov

In light of reports about possible measures from the European Union, Kyrgyzstan is actively negotiating with European countries. The Deputy Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic, Edil Baisalov, discussed this topic in an exclusive interview during a live broadcast at the World Government Summit in Dubai.

According to him, Kyrgyz diplomats in Brussels and other cities in Europe maintain stable connections with partners. Bishkek plans to strengthen its efforts in this direction, including additional consultations and negotiations.

Baisalov expressed confusion regarding reports of possible restrictions, as Kyrgyzstan needs to import components for the IT sector, especially for high-performance computers and aviation fuel.

“We do not understand these reports, and therefore we will intensify our negotiations. We are ready to request clarifications and provide them ourselves if necessary,” he noted.

He added that the Kyrgyz side is prepared to both receive clarifications and share its own comments with European colleagues.

“I am confident that the European authorities have enough wisdom and understanding not to worsen relations with the Kyrgyz Republic and not to create the impression of intending to restrict us or harm our development policy and economic stability,” Baisalov emphasized.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that the European Union is considering the possibility of imposing sanctions against Kyrgyzstan as part of efforts to combat circumvention of sanctions imposed against Russia. In particular, a ban on the export of certain machinery and radio equipment to the country is being discussed.

Since the beginning of 2022, more than 20 companies from Kyrgyzstan have fallen under sanctions from the US and the UK. The restrictions affect the financial sector, the oil and gas industry, as well as the supply of electronic and telecommunications equipment, IT infrastructure, aviation fuel, and air transport services.
