The 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women is taking place in New York, with a delegation from Kyrgyzstan led by Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov, according to information from the Supreme Court's press service.

The delegation also includes Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Court Nurgul Bakirova and other official representatives.

During the session, Kyrgyz participants joined the general debates on measures arising from the Fourth World Conference on Women and the twenty-third special session of the UN General Assembly. Participation in a high-level meeting dedicated to violence against women and girls is also planned.

Nurgul Bakirova, speaking at the session, emphasized the importance of ensuring access to justice for women and girls as a strategic priority for the sustainable development of Kyrgyzstan.

She noted that despite the established principle of equality, women and girls around the world, including in Kyrgyzstan, face various systemic barriers such as economic, geographical, informational, and socio-cultural obstacles.

Bakirova also drew attention to the existing legislative measures in the country aimed at achieving gender equality and protection from domestic violence, including the Law on State Guarantees of Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women and the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence.

According to judicial statistics, in 2025, 1,196 cases related to domestic violence were considered in Kyrgyzstan, which is a 24% increase compared to the previous year. Bakirova noted that this growth indicates the ongoing seriousness of the problem, as well as an increase in the detection of offenses and growing trust in the judicial system.

She also highlighted the significance of the National Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality by 2030, which includes improving legislation, strengthening protection mechanisms, expanding women's participation in public and political life, and supporting their economic independence.

Delegates from 107 countries are participating in the international forum on gender equality, and the session will last until March 19. The main theme of the meeting is ensuring and strengthening access to justice for women and girls.
