Nurlan Apsamatov, a 38-year-old resident of the village of Koshkorgon in the Chui region, is engaged in breeding Kyrgyz dogs known as taigans.

Recently, he purchased a taigan for 12,000 soms, and the very next day his pet took 2nd place in a wolf hunting competition.

“During the winter period in the mountainous areas of the Chui region and even in the steppes, you can encounter jackals. I often go hunting on horseback with my taigans. In winter, predators come down to the pastures, approaching the villages, and during this time I actively engage in hunting. I want to share a video that was filmed a few years ago. In this clip, my taigans, having caught the scent of a jackal, immediately began to chase it and quickly cornered it,” Nurlan shared.

According to Nurlan, he started breeding German Shepherds from childhood, but he only began to actively develop taigans two years ago.

“Since childhood, I grew up around animals. Anyone who keeps livestock definitely needs a dog. German Shepherds are perfect for herding work, but my interest in Kyrgyz taigans only arose after I started participating in ulak tartysh competitions. When I would go out on horseback, my neighbor often came with taigans, and they frequently returned with caught wolves or foxes. This sparked my interest in breeding taigans. A person named Talai Shukurov shared many interesting facts about taigans with me, and although I didn’t understand everything, I learned a lot of useful information. In the end, I bought my first taigan for 5,000 soms, and later I acquired another one for 12,000 soms from Ulan Kulekeeva. The next day, my new taigan was already participating in a salburun competition in Tokmok. We signed up for an event where there was a wolf on a chain. All the other taigans showed no reaction, but my taigan immediately rushed towards the wolf. When it was my turn, I let him go, and he boldly engaged in the fight. I realized that this taigan had talent and courage. In the end, we took 2nd place. To date, I already have 4 taigans, and I plan to increase their number to 10,” Apsamatov said.

Nurlan was born on April 23, 1987, in the village of Koshkorgon. He is married and raising six children.

“I have two daughters and four sons. My daughters are already grown up, and my sons are interested in my hobbies and want to engage in the Kyrgyz national game kok boru, as well as train in Kyrgyz wrestling (kyrgyz kuresh),” Nurlan added.
