India has introduced new customs rules for tourists and residents of the country

Indian authorities have approved updated customs regulations regarding the duty-free import of personal belongings for foreigners and citizens of the country, reports RIA Novosti.

Now, according to the new norms, tourists arriving in India on a tourist visa will be able to bring in personal belongings worth up to 25,000 rupees (approximately 276 dollars). For foreign nationals entering the country on other types of visas, the limit is set at 75,000 rupees (830 dollars). These same rules apply to Indians and citizens of Indian origin.

As clarified by the Indian news agency PTI, the new restrictions increase the previous norms: the limit for tourists has risen from 15,000 to 25,000 rupees, and for local residents — from 50,000 to 75,000 rupees. However, the authorities did not specify how the value of personal belongings will be assessed and what measures will be taken in case of exceeding the limit.

Additionally, the new rules introduce weight restrictions on duty-free imports of gold and platinum items: women can bring in up to 40 grams, while men can bring in up to 20 grams.

Finally, the rules stipulate the duty-free import of one laptop and pets.

The Ministry of Finance of India emphasized that the new rules simplify and consolidate 35 previously existing circulars.

“The updated system is aimed at expanding duty-free import limits, reducing waiting times, implementing digital technologies, and simplifying procedures, which in turn will make the process more comfortable for passengers. It will also help strengthen India's image as a country open to international tourism and friendly to tourists, thanks to the uniform application of rules at all customs points,” the ministry stated.
