Trump: India has agreed to abandon Russian oil. Washington has reduced tariffs for New Delhi

During his negotiations, Trump stated that India has agreed to stop purchasing oil from Russia and increase imports of American oil. "Modi has agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil and possibly start buying from Venezuela, which will help resolve the conflict in Ukraine," Trump noted in his message on Truth Social.

Additionally, he announced a new trade agreement between the two countries, which he said takes effect immediately. Under this agreement, the U.S. will reduce tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, while India has committed to work on reducing its tariffs and non-tariff barriers to zero.

The Indian authorities also agreed to purchase American goods, including products from the energy, coal, and agricultural sectors, totaling over $500 billion.

Trump expressed confidence that relations between the U.S. and India will only strengthen. "Prime Minister Modi and I are two people who get things done," he added.

Prime Minister Modi, in turn, thanked Trump for the tariff reduction while commenting on the results of the negotiations on social media X, but did not mention the abandonment of Russian oil.

This agreement is the result of several months of intensive trade negotiations between the countries, as noted by Reuters.

Interestingly, in August 2025, Trump imposed additional tariffs on Indian goods, citing ongoing oil purchases from Moscow. At the beginning of 2026, he threatened to raise tariffs if India did not stop these purchases.

Indian companies, amid these negotiations, have repeatedly suspended and resumed purchases of Russian oil, which was also prompted by U.S. sanctions against companies like Lukoil and Rosneft.
