On March 8, it became known that the Assembly of Experts had completed the election of a new Supreme Leader, according to information from the Iranian agency Mehr, citing members of the council.

It is expected that the head of the Assembly of Experts Secretariat, Hosseini Bushehri, will soon announce the name of the new leader, although no official comments have been made yet.

The Assembly of Experts consists of 88 theologians and legal scholars knowledgeable in Islamic law, and this body has the authority to elect the Supreme Leader of the country.

The election of a new leader was a consequence of the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 as a result of military actions by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory.

On the same day, February 28, Israel and the United States struck Iran. Donald Trump announced his intention to destroy Iran's nuclear program.

In response, Iran launched strikes on positions in Israel and other Middle Eastern countries where American military bases are located. Strikes were carried out on Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Dubai (UAE), and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).

As a result of the American-Israeli operation, the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed, and shortly thereafter, his wife, Mansoureh Khodjasteh, died from her injuries.

Donald Trump also stated that the military operation against Iran would last about four weeks. In response to the actions of the United States and Israel, Iran declared jihad, emphasizing that there would be no negotiations.

The conflict in the Middle East has global consequences, affecting, among others, Kyrgyzstan. Currently, thousands of tourists are stranded due to the situation in the UAE. Contact phone numbers for embassies and consulates for Kyrgyz citizens abroad can be found here.
