The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the ambassadors of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany for a discussion regarding their open support for the protesters opposing the government. This was reported by the Iranian state news agency Tasnim on January 12.

Earlier that same day, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the administration is considering several "very tough" measures against Iran amid the suppression of the protest movement. When asked whether Tehran had crossed the established "red line" — the killing of demonstrators, Trump replied: "It seems they are starting to do that."

In response to the suppression of protests, the European Parliament decided to impose a ban on Iranian diplomats from being on its territory. This ban, as noted in a letter from European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, also applies to all buildings in Brussels and Strasbourg, as well as the secretariat in Luxembourg. All Iranian citizens wishing to enter the European Parliament will undergo special checks, and if their names appear on a list associated with the regime in Tehran, they will be denied access.

"The people of Iran can count on the support and solidarity of this parliament," Metsola noted in her address to the deputies.

Protests against the government in Iran began on December 28, 2025. Initially, they were triggered by a financial crisis related to the devaluation of the national currency, but soon the demands of the demonstrators took on a political character.
The protests spread to over 60 cities in 25 provinces, with the largest demonstrations occurring in Tehran and cities such as Malekshahi, Kermanshah, and Lordegan in the west and southwest of the country. Authorities began to suppress the protests; however, reliable information about the events remains unavailable due to a complete internet shutdown in Iran for several days.

Human rights activists report that more than 600 people have died as a result of the protests.
