According to the HRANA human rights network based in the USA, the number of fatalities during the mass anti-government protests in Iran has risen to 538 as of January 11. Earlier reports indicated 203 victims, as reported by DW.

Since January 8, Iranian authorities have completely blocked the internet, significantly complicating the flow of information from the country. This restriction has lasted for over 70 hours, and journalists report that the only source of news remains Starlink satellite communications. Additionally, for the first time, authorities have begun using drones for surveillance, allowing them to identify protest participants. In such conditions, it is impossible to accurately count the number of casualties and arrests.

According to reporters, the actions of security forces are becoming increasingly brutal, as the current protests differ from previous waves of discontent in the country.

Judging by the scale of repression, the threat from officials, and the tone of state media, the situation has radically changed and has become unexpected for the authorities.

It is noted that even in hospitals, there is a risk for patients. "There is a high likelihood of the wounded being abducted by security forces. In many cases, families do not receive the bodies of the deceased," journalists from DW report.

Mass protests against the Iranian leadership began on December 28, 2025, and continue to this day. Despite the harsh measures from Iranian security forces and the internet blockade, thousands of people continue to take to the streets of Tehran and other major cities. Protesters bang on pots and shout slogans like "Death to Khamenei," referring to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while drivers honk in support.

On January 10, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that it intends to suppress the protests. "Ensuring state security is a red line for us, and we will defend national interests, strategic infrastructure, and public property with the use of force," the IRGC noted on state television.
