U.S. President Donald Trump, aboard Air Force One, stated that Washington is considering a number of "very tough" measures in response to the suppression of protests in Iran. His statement came in response to a question about whether Iran had crossed a previously established "red line" related to violence against protesters. Trump noted: "It seems they are starting to cross that line, and apparently, the victims are people who should not have been killed. These people are brutal — it is unclear whether they are real leaders or just rule through violence. We take this very seriously. The military is studying the situation, and we have several tough options under consideration. We will make a decision."
According to Clash Report, Trump also mentioned that Iranian authorities expressed a desire to start negotiations with the U.S.: "We may have to act before the meeting. <…> The meeting is still being organized. Iran called. They want to negotiate." Additionally, the president is in contact with representatives of the Iranian opposition, according to Reuters.
Since late December, large-scale protests have continued in Iran, with participants demanding a change in the political regime. According to the human rights organization HRANA, at least 544 people have died as a result of the protests. Iranian authorities blame the U.S. and Israel for organizing the protests.
