Somon Zamiin-Uud will become a city

The Prime Minister of Mongolia, Gombojavyn Zandanšatar, visited the Zamiin-Uud checkpoint and inspected the passenger and transport complex.

During his working visit to the somon of Zamiin-Uud, the Prime Minister familiarized himself with the operation of the passenger and transport complex at the Zamiin-Uud checkpoint (CP) as well as the process of cargo transportation across the border.

Since the complex was put into operation in 2023, the throughput of the checkpoint has tripled — now 8,000 to 12,000 passengers cross the border daily, whereas previously their number was 6,000 to 8,000.

In his address, Zandanšatar emphasized the importance of fully transitioning to an electronic system, noting that before achieving 100% automation, it is necessary to strengthen control and inspections to minimize risks. He also expressed the need for regular rotation of border and customs service personnel, pointing out that currently only five people work in shifts at the cargo section of the checkpoint, which is clearly insufficient. The Prime Minister proposed to increase the staff to 15-20 people for more effective operations.

The Zamiin-Uud checkpoint accounts for over 70% of Mongolia's cargo turnover, and the population of the region continues to grow. Active construction and infrastructure development require transforming the checkpoint into a major trade and logistics center. However, the Prime Minister expressed concern about the slow pace of work and promised to pay special attention to this issue.

To accelerate the implementation of the project, he instructed the somon leadership to complete all preparatory activities for obtaining city status by June 1. "The somon of Zamiin-Uud has enormous potential, but due to a lack of organization, we cannot fully utilize its capabilities. It is necessary to establish coordination, bring order, and accelerate the development of the region," the Prime Minister noted.

About 25,000 people live in the somon of Zamiin-Uud, including 5,000 to 8,000 temporary residents. The somon does not receive state subsidies; on the contrary, it generates revenue: last year, the budget received 18.7 billion tugriks.
