Moldova has initiated the process of exiting the CIS

The authorities of the Republic of Moldova have begun the procedure for denouncing the main agreements that served as the foundation for the establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States. This was reported by the country's Foreign Minister, Mihai Popșoi, on Radio Moldova, as reported by RIA Novosti.

The minister noted that the process concerns three key documents. After their denunciation, Moldova will officially cease its participation in the CIS. "The process has already started. The decision has been made, and we have begun the approval procedure," added the Foreign Minister.

It is expected that the documents will be sent to parliament for consideration after the start of the new session, which may occur by mid-February. If parliament approves them, and then President Maia Sandu signs them, the country will finally exit the CIS.

Since 2022, Moldova has not participated in CIS meetings and has effectively suspended cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union, in which it has observer status. The authorities intend to redirect their economic ties and exports to Western markets, as well as align international legal regulation with European standards as part of the course towards Eurointegration.

By the end of 2025, the republic plans to denounce 67 out of 255 agreements signed within the framework of the CIS.

However, the opposition criticizes this course, emphasizing the possible negative consequences for labor migrants and the country's economic ties. Former President and leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon previously stated that the actions of the current authorities contradict the interests of the nation and do not reflect the opinion of the majority of citizens.
