At the National Forum "Data and Security in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," held on January 28, Lothar Detterman, a professor of public law and a member of the Association of Professors of Public Law in Germany, stated that under pressure from regulators, American companies are opting to close off medical data instead of sharing it.

He noted that organizations are creating complex security systems and are reluctant to share information with others for fear of violating laws.

“The lack of sharing medical information leads to it remaining unused, which in turn hinders treatment, the search for new methods, scientific progress, and public health protection,” the expert added.

According to Detterman, there are about 50-60 laws in the U.S. that companies must comply with if they wish to conduct successful business; otherwise, they face lawsuits or inspections from authorities.

He also emphasized that some organizations prefer to keep personal medical data confidential, as they represent significant value and do not want to share them with competitors.
