The results of a long-term study conducted over 47 years and dedicated to the physical activity of the population were presented in an international scientific publication. The article was published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle on November 16, 2025.

The work was based on a Swedish population cohort and covered an age range from 16 to 63 years. During the study, the researchers analyzed levels of aerobic endurance, muscle strength, and power.

According to the obtained data, a person reaches their maximum physical capabilities by the age of 36. With age, starting from 35-40 years, there is a gradual decline in physical activity, which accelerates each year. By the age of 63, on average, the loss of physical performance is about 37%.

Interestingly, the rates of decline in physical fitness are the same for both men and women, despite the fact that men generally have higher absolute indicators.

The authors of the study emphasize that regular physical activity is a key factor in slowing down the aging process of decline. Additionally, transitioning to a more active lifestyle can significantly improve physical performance even in middle age.

It was also found that individuals with higher education show better results in both aerobic and muscular endurance.

The researchers conclude that the decline in physical fitness begins earlier than previously thought, highlighting the need to reconsider approaches to preventing the loss of muscle mass with age.
