Specialists at a medical institution in Russia successfully performed an operation to remove a tumor that had been developing for over 20 years and had reached a weight of more than 60 kilograms.

According to the regional Ministry of Health, the tumor exerted significant pressure on the inferior vena cava and led to the displacement of the intestines, bladder, and other organs, occupying almost the entire abdominal cavity of the patient.

Employees of the Sverdlovsk Regional Oncology Dispensary reported that the operation was performed on a 50-year-old man whose abdomen had been enlarging for two decades, but it did not raise any suspicions. Liposarcoma, which develops from adipose tissue, was difficult to diagnose, as in the early stages it can appear as a normal fat layer, complicating the detection of a health threat.

Doctors emphasized that the tumor was rapidly increasing in size: when the patient first sought medical help, his weight was approximately 150 kilograms, but just a month later it reached 180 kilograms. Due to the gigantic size of the neoplasm, it compressed the inferior vena cava and displaced internal organs. Vadim Golodnov, head of the abdominal oncology department, noted that in his 30 years of practice, he encountered a tumor of such volume for the first time.

The operation was associated with a high risk of significant blood loss and thromboembolism. The doctors carefully prepared for the positioning of the patient, as well as for intubation and other important aspects. The liposarcoma was completely removed in just 40 minutes.
