The main idea of John Tse was to create a device that could follow the user without requiring physical control. The umbrella, which operates like a drone, allows the user to keep their hands free, which is especially convenient for using mobile devices or carrying bags.

The ToF camera, unlike traditional optical systems, uses the principle of sonar to determine the distance to a person. It measures the time it takes for light to return from objects, allowing it to ignore visual interference such as shadows or bright clothing, and accurately track the position of the user's head, which is critical for the safe operation of the drone umbrella.

Traditional umbrellas have remained unchanged for many years, always requiring one occupied hand. The engineer decided to radically change this approach by creating a high-tech device that can be operated automatically.

The umbrella features a lightweight yet sturdy frame made from carbon fiber and nylon using 3D printing. Four powerful propellers are mounted on foldable supports that are hidden under the fabric of the canopy, allowing the device to remain compact during transport and stable during flight.

One of the biggest challenges during development was the proper distribution of load, as the central rod was the only rigid part of the structure. The engineer developed a unique fastening system using loops and elastic elements to minimize vibrations. This approach allows the drone to maintain a classic shape and stay securely in the air even in strong winds. The prototype was worked on for almost a year, during which the author faced various breakdowns and software failures, but ultimately achieved stable results.

Autonomous Following and Digital Perception


The main distinction of this model from previous ones is its autonomy. In order for the umbrella to not just fly but follow a person, a complex navigation system was implemented. Instead of traditional cameras or unreliable GPS, a ToF camera was used, which scans the space using light pulses.

This technology allows the device to create a three-dimensional map of the surrounding environment and accurately track the position of the owner's head even in low visibility conditions. Data processing is managed by a Raspberry Pi microcomputer, which sends commands to the flight controller.

“The goal of the project was not only to create a flying device but to make it capable of following a person,” shared the umbrella's author. Thanks to this technology, the device smoothly moves behind the owner, keeping the canopy in the correct position. Despite challenging conditions, it can operate even in heavy rain, making it truly functional in an urban environment.

During the project, the inventor also created a short film, which can be found on Youtube. In it, he shares key moments from the work that took nearly a year.
