Local residents shared this with a Turmush correspondent.
One of the traditions is called "öpкө чабуу". Shaybubu Anyrakayeva from the Bakai-Ata district said:
“This tradition is also known as ‘öpкө кагуу’. It is conducted not only during weddings but also for those who have recovered from illness, returned from distant travels, or served in the army. When the ‘kelinka’ comes into the house, the family gathers the groom and bride and hits them with goat lungs (Kyrgyz: ‘echkinin öpkösü’). This is done with the intention that all bad things will go away, and the young couple will become stronger, have children, and all of them will be healthy. Therefore, goat lungs are not consumed as food in Talas.”
Tilek Erkaliev spoke about other traditions that exist in the Bakai-Ata, Manas, and Kara-Buura districts of the Talas region.
“They say: ‘Salt makes food tasty, and girls bring people closer together.’ In 7 regions of Kyrgyzstan, there are various traditions related to the acceptance of a new family member — a daughter-in-law. For example, in Talas, traditions such as ‘terdetmey’, ‘müçö saluu’, and ‘chyktanga kirgizuu’ are well-known,” added T. Erkaliev.
“Chyktanga kirgizuu” is the process when senior matchmakers are invited into a room with the meat of slaughtered livestock. They are treated to meat and tail fat, and they can choose the pieces of meat they like.
