The building of the historical and local history museum in the city of Karakol, Issyk-Kul region, is 138 years old, said director Gulnaz Orozova.

According to her, there are currently 7 people working in the museum.

This is a one-story stone building with rusticated walls that give it a massive appearance. The house was built in 1887 by merchant livestock breeder M.N. Ilyin in the center of Karakol. It was a pre-revolutionary summer residence of this merchant's family.

From 1918 to 1920, it housed the District Council of Deputies, the headquarters of the regional Revolutionary Committee, the military enlistment office, the Defense House, and a library.

On November 1, 1948, the building was transformed into a museum by order of the Council of Ministers of the USSR (based on a resolution of the Council).

Since January 17, 2001, the museum has been named "Historical and Local History Museum of the City of Karakol," based on a resolution of the Karakol City Kenesh.

The museum features historical and cultural artifacts about Karakol and traditional Kyrgyz nomadic culture.

In one of the museum's halls, there is a permanent photo exhibition of works by the famous Swiss traveler Ella Maier — the first officially registered European woman traveler who traveled independently through Central Asia. Maier's black-and-white photographs reflect the world before Central Asia became part of the Soviet Union. The images captured in the photographs are timeless and yet modern, reflecting a vanished world.

The museum consists of seven halls.
