Amid the decline in global prices for beans, the government is developing a series of initiatives to support farmers in the Talas region. This was reported by Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Food Processing, at a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh.

Torobaev noted that beans have become dependent on global commodity exchanges, leading to a decrease in their value of almost 50% — from $1600 to $930 per ton. Additionally, the low competitiveness of local producers is a concern, as in other countries beans are exported after special processing and in quality packaging, while Kyrgyz farmers only use simple dust separation.

As the minister explained, fumigation involves special measures to combat pests and plant diseases. In this regard, the government plans to implement modern standards for fumigation and product packaging. A batch of 1,000 tons of beans, previously purchased by the Cabinet of Ministers, will be used to demonstrate the fumigation processes to farmers.

Furthermore, the issue of updating the seed fund is being addressed. Currently, the caliber of local beans is 5-6, while international standards require 8-9. To stimulate domestic demand, the government also intends to include beans in the menus of schools and the army, emphasizing their role as an important source of protein.

In conclusion, Bakyt Torobaev added that the possibility of subsidizing transportation costs for exports is being considered. Farmers in the Talas region have also been encouraged to explore the cultivation of alternative agricultural crops; however, the final decision will remain with the agrarians themselves.
