One of Iran's recent trump cards has been the announcement of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Yesterday, a statement was made about its reopening "until further notice," but this appears to be part of a "fog of war" tactic. American military ships remain a legitimate target for Iran, and proximity to them risks turning the situation into an active combat zone.
As a result, oil tankers that were in the Persian Gulf remained anchored, avoiding attempts to pass through the narrow Strait of Hormuz. One of the tankers was attacked and sank, cutting off the route for others.
The cost of freight insurance has already increased, which may lead to a sharp rise in oil prices this week. This creates significant political risks for the US administration. The war against Iran does not garner much support among Americans, and when voters see gasoline prices double, it could negatively impact votes for the Republicans who initiated the aggression. Losing control in Congress could lead to Trump's impeachment and lawsuits against his team.
The conflict with Iran is turning into an extremely costly adventure for the US, and expenses continue to rise. Expectations that mass bombings and brutal actions against the civilian population would scare Iranians and undermine their unity have not materialized. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Tehran, mourning their dead and vowing to continue the fight.
