The volume of Afghan drugs seized by law enforcement in Tajikistan increased by one and a half times

During the press conference, Zafar Samad noted that of the total volume of drugs seized in 2025, 2566 kg was confiscated at the border with the Khatlon region, and 186 kg on the section with the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).

Additionally, he reported a significant increase in the number of armed clashes with Afghan drug traffickers. In 2025, there were 17 incidents, which is three times more than in 2024, when only 6 such cases were recorded.

“On the border of Tajikistan with Afghanistan, 17 armed clashes with drug traffickers were recorded, resulting in the neutralization of 10 Afghan citizens. In comparison, in 2024, only three traffickers were neutralized,” he stated. In the previous year, two employees of the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) of Tajikistan were killed in similar incidents.

Samad also emphasized the lack of interaction with Afghan law enforcement agencies. “There is no inter-agency cooperation with the authorized bodies of Afghanistan, and no negotiations have been conducted,” he noted, adding that drug trafficking through the territory of Tajikistan continues.

Overall, in 2025, Tajik law enforcement agencies seized 5280 kg of drugs, which is 21% or 899 kg more compared to the previous year. Among them, 253.4 kg were psychotropic substances, which is 142 kg more than in 2024. Of this volume, 247 kg, or 97%, was methamphetamine.

Last year, the activities of 44 criminal groups involved in drug trafficking were disrupted. The Anti-Narcotics Agency initiated 132 criminal cases against 180 individuals, which were sent to court.

In 2024, 22 foreigners were detained for bringing drugs into Tajikistan, and 275 kg of narcotic substances were seized from them. Of these, 99 kg belonged to 9 Afghan citizens, 131 kg to 8 Uzbeks, 44 kg to 4 Kazakhs, and 4 grams to a citizen of Moldova. Information about the penalties was not disclosed.

Also, in 2025, 583 Tajik citizens were detained for drug offenses abroad, with 208 kg of drugs seized from them.

According to Zafar Samad, despite the current situation, control by law enforcement remains at an adequate level. After the press conference, agency employees burned about 316 kg of seized drugs in the presence of journalists.

At the same time, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan announced plans to reward citizens with valuable gifts and monetary rewards for information about individuals involved in the illegal drug trade and other serious crimes. Full confidentiality for informants is guaranteed.
