The new Supreme Leader of Iran - who is he?

The Iranian Council of Experts has called on the population to "swear allegiance" to the new head of state

The Supreme Leader of Iran is Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a joint operation by the United States and Israel, as reported by "Radio Free Europe".

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) expressed full support for this choice, stating that they are "ready to obey and sacrifice themselves in fulfillment of the divine instructions" of the new leader.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who is 56 years old, is the second of six children of Ali Khamenei. He received his secondary education at the Alavi religious school in Tehran, and then, after a brief service in the army during the Iran-Iraq War, went to Qom in 1999 to deepen his religious knowledge — this city is considered the most important center of Shia theology.

Although Mojtaba has never held government positions or given public interviews, he spent 20 years in the company of his father, coordinating relations between the clergy and the IRGC.

His wife, Zahra Haddad Adel, also became a victim of the same operation as Ali Khamenei. The couple has three children, and although it was reported that their eldest son, who is 18 years old, also died, this information has not been confirmed.

U.S. President Donald Trump previously characterized Mojtaba Khamenei's selection as "unacceptable," emphasizing that the United States should be involved in the process of appointing the new Supreme Leader.

Last week, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that any leader appointed by the "Iranian terrorist regime" would become a "priority target for elimination." The Israel Defense Forces have been instructed to prepare to carry out this task as part of Operation "Lion's Roar".
